Candle Burning & Safety Tips

We've compiled a list of tips for the proper and safe burning of your
candles from Sterling Candles & Scents.
We hope you find them helpful and that you enjoy your candles.

• Never leave a burning candle unattended

• Never burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire

• Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets

Before lighting:

• Trim the wick to 1/4 inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping, smoking, or flaring.
• Always use a candleholder specifically designed for candle use that is heat resistant, sturdy, and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.
• Burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
• Place the candleholder on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Do not place candle directly on furniture, fabric or countertops. Always place candles on non-porous, flame retardant surfaces.
• Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.
• Avoid drafts, vents or air currents to help prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping. If you see the flame flickering, you should move the candle to another location with less air movement.
• Follow the manufacturer's recommendations on burn time and proper use.
• Remove packaging & label before lighting.
• Burn at least one hour per inch of candle diameter each time the candle is lit to ensure the best burning efficiency.
• Never let children play with candles.
• Always check for cracks, chips or hairline fractures in the glass container, do not burn candles with damaged containers.
• Before burning a votive candle in our votive glass holder, place a couple of drops of water in holder. After candle is extinguished and cooled, votive should be easier to remove from holder.
• The first time you burn a pillar candle, allow the wax pool to extend to the outside rim before extinguishing the flame. Wax has a "memory" so at subsequent burnings the candle will melt out to the edge and burn evenly. As a rule, pillar candles should be burned one hour for each inch of its diameter.

While burning:

• Never touch or move a burning candle or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquefied.
• Don't burn a candle all the way down. Discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains or 1/2 inch if in a container.
• Extinguish a candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for unwanted drafts before re-lighting.
• Always keep the candle within your sight. If you leave the room, be sure to first extinguish all candles.
• Votive candles are designed to liquefy so only burn them in tight-fitting votive holders.
• Never burn candles for more than 2 consecutive hours.
• If glass becomes chipped or broken, do not continue to burn.
• When a "mushroom" is formed on the wick, extinguish the flame, let cool, trim wick to 1/4" and relight. Otherwise, the "mushroom" could smoke and cause an oversized flame.
• Remember to burn pillar candles in a draft free area or your candle may tend to burn to one side. If so, rotate your candle accordingly.

When extinguishing:

• Use a candle snuffer to extinguish a candle, to help prevent hot wax from splattering. Blowing out a candle encourages smoking and soot.
• Never extinguish by placing the lid on a burning candle.
• Never use water to extinguish a candle.
• Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
• Don't touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
